For many people, a long car journey is part and parcel of a holiday, a weekend break or a day out. During the journey, attention is often focused on the route, the journey time or the weather at the destination, whilst sun protection is less likely to spring to mind. Yet UV radiation passing through the car window can have a greater impact than you might expect at first glance. In this article, you can read about how this works and why sun protection remains important whilst on the move.
UV radiation whilst driving is often underestimated
Many people mainly associate UV radiation with spending time outdoors – think of a day at the beach, a walk or an afternoon in the garden. It feels different in the car, because you’re sheltered and have less direct contact with the sun.
However, that does not mean you are completely shielded. During a journey, sunlight can shine on one side of the car for a long time, meaning the same areas of your skin are exposed to light and heat for an extended period.
As a result, UV radiation through the car window is a more significant concern than is often realised, particularly during holidays and long journeys.
Long car journeys result in prolonged exposure
A short drive to the shops is quite different from spending hours on the road travelling to a holiday destination. During longer car journeys, you spend a lot of time in the same position, whilst the sun continues to shine throughout the day and changes direction.
Think of a trip to the South of France, a summer holiday in Italy or a long day trip. Precisely because you’re not actively taking sun protection measures whilst on the road, exposure to sunlight often goes unnoticed more easily than during a day spent outdoors.
Clothing as a practical addition to sun protection
Sunscreen remains an essential part of protecting your skin from UV radiation. At the same time, in practice it is not always possible to reapply it regularly, for example whilst driving.
In such cases, clothing can be a practical addition. With UV-STOP Protection Wash, you can make ordinary clothing UV-resistant up to UPF 50+. This means the fabric helps block UV radiation during sunny spells whilst you’re out and about, without you having to wear new or special clothing.
This makes it particularly handy during holidays, road trips or long days when you’re on the move a lot.
Sun protection starts on the journey
UV radiation coming through the car window is often only given a second thought when people are travelling for long periods. Yet exposure to sunlight doesn’t just begin at your final destination; it starts during the journey itself.
By including sun protection in your preparations and combining it with UV-protective clothing, it becomes easier to protect your skin whilst on the move. This way, you’ll be more mindful of sun exposure not just at your destination, but throughout the entire journey.

On the advice of my family doctor
Due to an accident I had several burns on my body and I had been advised by my doctor to avoid the uv rays as much as possible. A colleague pointed me to the protection wash and indeed I was considerably less affected by the sun.

Playing outside again without irritation
Our youngest daughter is covered in rashes at the slightest hint of sunshine. Putting sunscreen all over her was the only solution we thought. Until we heard about UV-STOP. However, we couldn’t imagine that it would work and when we bought it we thought, don’t tell anyone because they will all laugh at us if it turns out that it doesn’t work. After the first beautiful days, we are completely converted. Great our girl just played outside with the others and she is not bothered by anything. If only we had known sooner. People believe me it really works.
