The warmth of the sun on your skin is often the cue to apply sun cream. But when is UV radiation actually at its strongest? Many people associate strong UV radiation with hot summer days, but this isn’t always the case. UV rays don’t depend on temperature, but on the position of the sun and other factors that are less obvious.

When is UV radiation at its strongest during the day?

UV radiation is at its strongest when the sun is highest in the sky. This is usually in the middle of the day. At that time, UV rays travel a shorter distance through the atmosphere, making them stronger and having a greater impact on your skin.

This means your skin is more likely to burn or become damaged around these times. However, it is important to realise that UV rays are not only present at that time. There are still UV rays in the morning and afternoon, although they are less intense.

Why UV radiation isn’t always visible or noticeable

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you only notice UV radiation when it’s warm or sunny. In reality, you can’t see UV radiation and often can’t feel it straight away either.

On cloudy days, a significant amount of UV radiation can still penetrate the clouds. As a result, you can be exposed without realising it, without feeling that protection is necessary. It is precisely this that increases the risk, as sun protection is often overlooked at such times.

UV radiation all year round

UV radiation isn’t limited to a single season. It’s present in spring, autumn and even in winter. As soon as you’re outside, your skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays, regardless of the temperature.

During everyday activities such as walking, cycling, gardening or simply sitting on a terrace, you can absorb enough UV radiation to have an effect on your skin. These moments may seem harmless, but when added up, they can contribute to long-term skin damage.

When does UV radiation affect your skin the most?

The impact of UV radiation depends not only on the time of day, but also on how long you are outside and how well you protect yourself from the sun. Prolonged exposure, even in less intense sunlight, can have an effect.

Environmental factors also play a role. For example, UV rays can reflect off surfaces such as water, sand or light-coloured paving. This can increase the amount of radiation reaching your skin, even if you are sitting in the shade.

Sun protection that protects you every day

Sunscreen provides essential protection, but in practice it is often not reapplied frequently enough. Sweating, swimming or simply forgetting to reapply it means that the protection wears off.

With UV-STOP Protection Wash, you can make your clothing UV-resistant up to UPF 50+. This gives your clothing an extra layer of protection against UV radiation. This helps protect your skin at times when you haven’t applied sun cream or simply haven’t thought about it.

Being more mindful of UV radiation in your daily life

Knowing when UV radiation is at its strongest helps you make more informed choices. Not just on a day at the beach, but especially during everyday activities and moments spent outdoors.

By combining sun protection methods rather than relying on a single solution, you reduce the risk of skin damage. This way, you can continue to enjoy being outdoors whilst better protecting your skin against UV radiation at any time of day and in every season.

On the advice of my family doctor

Due to an accident I had several burns on my body and I had been advised by my doctor to avoid the uv rays as much as possible. A colleague pointed me to the protection wash and indeed I was considerably less affected by the sun.

Playing outside again without irritation

Our youngest daughter is covered in rashes at the slightest hint of sunshine. Putting sunscreen all over her was the only solution we thought. Until we heard about UV-STOP. However, we couldn’t imagine that it would work and when we bought it we thought, don’t tell anyone because they will all laugh at us if it turns out that it doesn’t work. After the first beautiful days, we are completely converted. Great our girl just played outside with the others and she is not bothered by anything. If only we had known sooner. People believe me it really works.
