The sun has been showing itself a lot lately, and we love it! The warm rays on our skin, the longer evenings, playing outside with the kids. And let’s be honest, that Vitamin D is a nice bonus too. But this same sun, a source of energy and joy, also carries an invisible risk: UV radiation.
As a parent, there’s nothing you want more than to protect your children. You diligently apply sunscreen on sunny days. But what if the sun is hidden behind a cloud cover? Did you know that UV radiation is present even on cloudy days and can reach your children’s sensitive skin? That’s precisely why it’s so important to look beyond just sunscreen.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the Netherlands. It was recently in the news: it’s not only the most common, but also the fastest-growing form of cancer in our country. Although the effects of excessive UV exposure often only become visible later in life, the damage begins at a young age. Children’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than adults’, making them extra vulnerable to the sun’s harmful effects. Repeated exposure to UV radiation in childhood can significantly increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. Given the alarming increase in skin cancer, it is all the more important to protect the little ones as best as possible.
Fortunately, there’s an easy way to increase the sun protection of your children’s clothing: UV-STOP. Our product, developed by YOU&UV in collaboration with Dutch scientists, is simply added to your washing machine or hand wash water. The result? Ordinary clothing transforms into garments with a significantly higher protection factor against UV radiation.
Where a typical T-shirt offers only a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of 5+ to 25+, a single wash with UV-STOP increases this to UPF 30+ to as much as 50+. This means that a much larger portion of harmful UV radiation is blocked, leaving your child’s skin better protected, even under a cloudy sky.
The answer is simple: because UV radiation is always present. Whether the sun is shining brightly or hidden behind clouds, your children are exposed to UV radiation when they play outside, cycle to school, or go for a walk. It’s important to know that there are different types of UV radiation, such as UVA and UVB, each with a different effect on the skin and varying degrees of potential harm.
