On sunny days, it’s wonderful to sit in the shade of a parasol. But how safe is that for your skin? Does a parasol completely block UV rays, or can harmful radiation still slip through? In this article, we explain what you can expect from parasols and how to properly protect your skin.
Does a parasol protect your skin from UV rays?
A parasol certainly offers a first layer of protection against the sun. The fabric blocks a large portion of the direct UV radiation coming from above. However, UV radiation can still reach you under the umbrella. This happens, for example, because sunlight reflects off the ground, sand, or other surfaces, or because the sun is shining at an angle. It is therefore important to know that a parasol does not fully protect your skin from UV damage.
What to look for in a parasol that blocks UV rays
The extent to which a parasol blocks UV radiation depends on various factors. These include the material of the parasol, its color, and any coatings. Dark and tightly woven fabrics generally offer more protection than light, thin fabrics. However, UV radiation can still partially pass through the parasol, especially in intense sunlight or when you are not sitting directly under the parasol.
How to combine parasols with extra protection
Sitting under a parasol helps, but it’s often not enough on its own. That’s why you should combine shade with other forms of sun protection. Think of UV-protective clothing, a hat, and sunscreen. With UV-STOP Protection Wash, you can make your regular clothing UV-protective up to UPF 50+, so your skin is better protected, even when you step out of the direct shade for a moment.
UV radiation under a parasol: stay alert
A parasol reduces the amount of UV radiation that hits your skin directly, but it doesn’t block it completely. For effective protection, it’s wise to combine multiple measures: a sunshade, UV-protective clothing, and sunscreen. This way, you can safely enjoy the sun without unnecessarily exposing your skin to harmful UV rays.

No, a beach umbrella reduces direct UV radiation from above, but does not block it completely. UVA rays can still penetrate beneath the umbrella, especially when reflected off sand, grass, or other surfaces.
This depends on the type of umbrella, the material, the color, and any coatings. Dark, tightly woven fabrics offer the most protection, while light or thin fabrics allow more UV rays to pass through.
A beach umbrella alone is often not enough, especially in intense sunlight or during prolonged exposure. It’s a good idea to combine it with additional protection, such as sunscreen and UV-protective clothing.
Yes! Treating your clothes with UV-STOP Protection Wash gives them a UPF rating of up to 50+. This way, your skin is protected even when UV rays penetrate the umbrella or when you step out of the shade for a moment.
A parasol often provides more consistent protection because you can adjust its angle and position. With any type of shade, UV rays can still reach your skin through reflections or at an angle.
No, effectiveness varies by umbrella. Materials, color, and density all play a role. For effective protection, it’s important to take these factors into account and supplement your sun protection with UV-protective clothing or sunscreen.

On the advice of my family doctor
Due to an accident I had several burns on my body and I had been advised by my doctor to avoid the uv rays as much as possible. A colleague pointed me to the protection wash and indeed I was considerably less affected by the sun.

Playing outside again without irritation
Our youngest daughter is covered in rashes at the slightest hint of sunshine. Putting sunscreen all over her was the only solution we thought. Until we heard about UV-STOP. However, we couldn’t imagine that it would work and when we bought it we thought, don’t tell anyone because they will all laugh at us if it turns out that it doesn’t work. After the first beautiful days, we are completely converted. Great our girl just played outside with the others and she is not bothered by anything. If only we had known sooner. People believe me it really works.
