What does SPF 30 mean for your sun protection?

When the sun starts shining, we all rush to grab our sunscreen. Almost every package has the letters SPF printed on it in large letters. SPF 30 is one of the most popular variants, but there is often uncertainty about how it works exactly. To keep your skin healthy and prevent premature ageing or damage, it is good to know exactly how this protection factor works.

The meaning behind the protection factor

Many people wonder: what exactly is SPF 30? The abbreviation stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number indicates how much UV radiation the sunscreen can block. In the case of factor 30, approximately 97 per cent of UVB rays are blocked, provided you apply the cream thickly enough. It is a misconception that a higher factor such as 50 offers complete protection. In practice, the difference in protection between these two is very small.

When we look at what SPF 30 means for your specific situation, it is about extending the amount of time you can spend in the sun without getting sunburned. The factor acts as a tool to increase your skin’s natural protection.

For example, if your skin starts to redden after just ten minutes in bright sunlight, factor 30 will slow down this process. Although in theory this means you can spend considerably longer in the sun, this value has been determined under ideal conditions. In everyday life, the actual duration of protection is often shorter due to external factors such as sweating, swimming or the natural friction of your clothing against your skin.

How long does SPF 30 work after you apply it?

In practice, the protection provided by a sunscreen product is always temporary. Most experts and skincare guidelines recommend reapplying sunscreen every two hours. This is because its effectiveness diminishes due to exposure to daylight and your skin’s natural processes. What’s more, most people apply sunscreen much more thinly than is necessary to achieve the protection factor stated on the bottle, which means you are at greater risk of damage without even realising it.

What is a sustainable alternative to sunscreen?

Because applying sunscreen is prone to errors, we often forget spots or don’t apply it often enough, UV-resistant clothing offers a solution. Whereas the protection provided by sunscreen wears off over time, the protection provided by UV-resistant clothing remains constant.

By washing your clothes with UV-STOP Protection Wash, you add an invisible barrier that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Not only does this last longer, it is also much more practical.

By carefully applying sunscreen to your skin and washing your clothes with UV-STOP Protection Wash, you can create effective protection against UV radiation. This provides you with multiple layers of protection against the sun, allowing you to enjoy a sunny day without any worries.

Frequently asked questions

Does SPF 30 offer sufficient protection from the sun?

Yes, provided you apply the sunscreen correctly and thickly enough. SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays. However, for complete protection, it is wise to combine this with UV-resistant clothing, as clothing forms a constant barrier that does not fade due to perspiration or friction.

How often should I reapply factor 30 sunscreen?

Sunscreen is only effective for a limited time. It is recommended that you reapply it every two hours. If you sweat a lot, go swimming or if your clothing rubs against your skin, the protection wears off more quickly and you will need to reapply more often.

Is washing clothing with UV-STOP better than just using sunscreen?

It is primarily a practical and sustainable addition. Whereas sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time and spots are often missed, clothing treated with UV-STOP offers constant and even protection against both UVA and UVB rays. The best protection for your skin is achieved by applying sunscreen to exposed skin and protecting the rest with UV-resistant clothing.

On the advice of my family doctor

Due to an accident I had several burns on my body and I had been advised by my doctor to avoid the uv rays as much as possible. A colleague pointed me to the protection wash and indeed I was considerably less affected by the sun.

Playing outside again without irritation

Our youngest daughter is covered in rashes at the slightest hint of sunshine. Putting sunscreen all over her was the only solution we thought. Until we heard about UV-STOP. However, we couldn’t imagine that it would work and when we bought it we thought, don’t tell anyone because they will all laugh at us if it turns out that it doesn’t work. After the first beautiful days, we are completely converted. Great our girl just played outside with the others and she is not bothered by anything. If only we had known sooner. People believe me it really works.
